Description:
World War One living history will be part of pre-Fleet Week activities with a two-hour exhibition at Miller Field in Staten Island. The U.S. WWI Centennial Commission will have exhibition space with WWI living historians presenting period displays, equipment, uniforms, and more. Learn more about New York’s role in WWI, from recruiting to training.
Fleet Week New York will have active duty U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel on hand, with aviation units, to include include military displays of aviation and personnel equipment, static displays, demonstrations. New this year will include a combined team of members from U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) will present a fast rope demonstration showing how an EOD team can be inserted into an area too dangerous for ships to navigate. The U.S. Fleet Forces "Brass Band" will perform.
All events are free and open to the public.

Bringing WWI History to Life - USS NEW YORK, PIER 88

One of the most famous ships in the modern U.S. Navy is the USS New York (LPD-21) a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. She is making her first Fleet Week New York appearance. Come aboard and see active duty Navy and Marines as they present static displays and show off their ship. But mixed in will be the USS Olympia Living History Crew from Philadelphia’s Independence Seaport Museum. Come meet these living historians as they present the U.S. Navy and Marines Corps of WWI. They will be in period uniforms, with vintage equipment and items from the 1918 era. They will be able to show you what life was like in the sea service in WWI. Ask them any question about how the Navy deployed and operated from the WWI era. Don’t forget to take some photos too.
As you disembark, be sure to visit the WWI exhibit on the pier and learn how you can Find Your WWI Ancestors and how to get your FREE “WWI Genealogy Research Guide - The author will be on hand daily between 1pm and 3pm.

One of the most powerful ships in the modern U.S. Navy is the USS Jason Dunham, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She is making her first Fleet Week New York appearance in Brooklyn. Come aboard and see active duty Navy and Marines as they present static displays and show off their ship. But mixed in will be the USS Olympia Living History Crew from Philadelphia’s Independence Seaport Museum. Come meet these living historians as they present the U.S. Navy and Marines Corps of WWI. AKC Museum of the Dog - Stubby Salutes Statue Unveiling

Join the unveiling of Stubby Salutes, a bronze sculpture addition to the Museum! Stubby Salutes celebrates Stubby, a canine hero and mascot to the 26th Yankee Division during World War I. Learn about Stubby’s military conquests and how he served in the trenches and on the battle grounds of France.
USS San Diego Lost at Sea Memorial, Duffy Square
Time: 2:00 pm
Location: Duffy Square, 7th Avenue & 47th Street, NY, NY 10036

Description: The only U.S. warship lost to enemy action in American waters during WWI was the USS San Diego, which struck a mine laid by a German U-boat about 10 miles from Fire Island, July 19, 1918. The ship was lost and six Sailors perished. Join the U.S. WWI Centennial Commission as we unveil the USS San Diego Lost at Sea Memorial. The memorial will be unveiled at 2:00 p.m. in Duffy Square, the perfect spot underneath the gaze of Father Francis Duffy, the hero chaplain of the Fighting 69th Regiment. The plaque will then be taken to Ocean Beach, Long Island, where it will be placed on the shore of the Atlantic.

AKC Museum of the Dog - Meet Sawyer the Sea Dog

Meet Sawyer The Sea Dog the mascot from the National Museum of the U.S. Navy to learn about the roles of dogs in the United States military. Sawyer is bringing his owner - Tom Frezza - the museum’s Director of Communication. Kids can take part in activities and get Sawyer coloring sheets and find out how Sawyer is a real working dog. Come find out about WWI activities we are supporting, The event will include a performance by the WWI 369th Experience - a recreation of the 369th Regimental Band - who brought American Jazz to France. The ay includes numerous musical performances by national recording artists, a performance by the U.S Coast Guard Silent Drill Team, active duty U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel on hand, to include military displays of equipment, static displays, and demonstrations.

The U.S. WWI Centennial Commission invites you to join them Sunday, May 26, Noon, at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. The U.S. WWI Centennial Commission will have exhibition space with WWI living historians presenting period displays, equipment, uniforms, and more. Learn more about New York’s role in WWI, from recruiting to training. The 369th Experience—40 musicians who perform the music of James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hell Fighters—will be giving two performances at 1pm and 4pm. We will remember the July 1916 Black Tom explosion, and we will be in the exact spot where the sabotage took place.
Fleet Week New York will have active duty U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel on hand, with aviation units, to include include military displays of aviation and personnel equipment, static displays, demonstrations. Fleet Week activities in the park include Navy and Marine helicopter landings, Navy Band performances, drill team performances, static displays, kids activities.

Memorial Day Parade, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

The 369th Experience Band will march proudly in Brooklyn’s traditional Memorial Day Parade, including the Memorial Service at John Paul Jones Park.
The band will lead the parade with James Reese Europe’s and Noble Sissle’s descendants James Reese Europe III, Noble Sissle, Jr., and Cynthia Sissle.
The U.S. WWI Centennial Commission invites you to join them for this special WWI theme at the annual Memorial Day Parade in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
The parade route is from 78th St. and Third Ave., along Third Ave. to Marine Ave., up to Fourth Ave. and over to John Paul Jones Park on 101st St. and Fourth Ave. for the memorial service and concert.
