Commission Approves Music/Art/Literature Projects
Washington, DC - The Commission endorsed 8 projects at its meeting in Washington last week. They include an animated film on the true story of an unbreakable bond between a soldier and his dog - dubbed "Sergeant Stubby". Other projects endorsed were two musical projects, photo exhibits, an exposition, and a book. Commissioners also set budget requirements for 2016, and noted that the schedule for the development of the National World War I Memorial in Pershing Park is on track.

CBS Takes Interest in CountDownToVeteransDay
Washington, DC - CBS/Westwood One recorded an interview with Chief Development Officer Roger Fisk last Sunday afternoon about why one day a year is not enough to recognize our vets. His piece is scheduled to air on the 700 stations of Westwood One before Veteran's Day.

AUSA Participation
Washington, DC - The Commission completed the fall schedule of trade shows with an appearance at the Association of the United States Army show at the Washington Convention Center. This trade show is the largest of the shows in which we participated this year -- about 30 thousand strong. The Commission also exhibited recently at the Air Force Association Show and the American Legion Convention in Baltimore.

Our friends and colleagues in the French Centenary program are getting ready to announce a new, very exciting program. A major media event is planned for later this month and will be attended by Commissioner Monique Seefried - our European ‘connection’. So no spoilers here, but do have a look at the teaser.

Partnership with the Great War Channel
The Commission is now in partnership with the Great War Channel in Berlin. Posting twice a week, ‘The Great War’ shows you the history of the First World War in the four years from 1914 to 1918. The host, Indy Neidell, takes you back week by week and shows you what was going on. Upcoming:

The French Uniforms of World War 1 : THE GREAT WAR - Special
Helmets to boots. The French were the first army to adapt a real military helmet with the M15. In the beginning of the war they were still wearing the traditional Kepi from Franco-Prussian War, however. Find out all about the French equipment in the trenches with Indy.

8 million! On the Way to 11,111,111 by Veteran's Day
Veteran's Day started with Armistice Day which marked the cessation of hostilities in WWI. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. But one day a year is not enough to recognize all our Veterans have done for us. If you agree, join 8 million of your colleagues and friends, and check out CountDownToVeteransDay.org. It’s a Commission-supported one-stop shop for Veterans Day volunteer activities and opportunities. You can go there to add volunteer opportunities - just click “Link In My Organization” - or to plan your own day of service on November 11.

Remember to use the hashtag #CountDownToVeteransDay on your social media to get the word out. We encourage everyone to look at Veterans Day not as a ‘day off’ but as a ‘day on’ to volunteer for a Veterans’ organization and to help the community. Let's reach 11,111,111 impressions by November 11th as another way to say we remember.

Washington State Goes Green
Seattle, WA - The great state of Washington is the most recent state to get a centennial commemoration organization stood up. Congratulations!

Remember, this Thursday, November 5 at Noon EST, we will hold a special State Outreach Collaboration Call with a focus on veterans history projects and the Library of Congress letter and artifact collection programs. We have three expert panelists for this topic: Bob Patrick from the LOC, Andrew Bullen from the Illinois State Library, and Christine Pittsley from the Connecticut State Library. Subsequent collaboration calls will take place on the first Thursday of the month. Contact a State Outreach Coordination Team member to get on the roster.

Fall Back! DST in the USA started in WWI
In the U.S., Daylight Saving Time – or “fast time”, as it was called then – was first introduced in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law to support the war effort during World War I. The initiative was sparked by Robert Garland, a Pittsburgh industrialist who had encountered the idea in the United Kingdom. A passionate campaigner for the use of DST in the United States, he is often called the “father of Daylight Saving”.

The seasonal time change was repealed just seven months later. However, some cities – including Pittsburgh, Boston, and New York – continued to use it until President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted DST in the United States in 1942.

Camp Logan a Century Ago

Houston, TX - Congressman Ted Poe TX-2 tipped us off to the fact that World War One history often can be right under your feet! Thousands of Houstonians enjoy their Memorial Park everyday, but many do not realize that the park began as Camp Logan, a massive WWI training camp. Built in 1917, the camp was half the size of Manhattan and could house over 50,000 soldiers- by comparison, Houston only had a population of 100,000 at the time. Today, local archaeologists, historians, civic leaders, and citizens are working together to bring back the history of the camp, as well as its role in our national story, for future generations. Two days of detailed focus on the design concepts will help to inform the final decision. Look for a final design concept after the first of the year. You can follow Memorial developments here.

Countdown to Veterans Day makes 36 Million impressions

Washington, DC - In a campaign championed by hundreds of WWI partners across the country, Americans everywhere answered the call to help Vets. In New Hampshire we supported Operation Care for Our Troops which provided donations and made care packages for active troops; the World War One Museum in Kansas City did a thrift store donation drive with the Disabled Veterans of America; and out of nowhere came a group of high school students in Auburn, Alabama to pay tribute to specific veterans in their area. These are just a few of the many inspiring examples of veteran-themed service across the nation. We are proud to have played a small part in such a wave of community service which also provided a good opportunity to tell the story of the first Veteran's Day, November 11,1918, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, which marked the cessation of hostilities in WWI.
AND stay tuned as Countdown to Veterans Day 2016 is underway!
