There are abundant opportunities for local and regional Indiana World War I celebrations, projects and programs to reflect and recognize the 135,000 Hoosiers who served in The Great War and the 3,000 who sacrificed their lives.

To promote and support these community projects and programs, the Indiana World War I Centennial Committee is accepting applications for endorsement — upon approval those projects will become official Indiana World War I Legacy Projects.

Benefits of Endorsement

The Indiana World War I Centennial Committee endorsed projects and programs will receive:

• • Listing on the Indiana WWI Centennial Committee website, www.ww1cc.org/Indiana
  • Listing on the World War One Centennial Commission events calendar, www.ww1cc.org/commemorate/event-map-system.html
  • Permission to use the official Indiana WWI Centennial logo, in accordance with the established logo guidelines, on Indiana WWI Centennial related promotional materials
  • Letter of endorsement from the Indiana WWI Centennial Committee

Endorsement Criteria

To be considered for endorsement by the Indiana WWI Centennial Committee, the applicant must demonstrate to the Committee’s satisfaction that the proposed project meets the following required criteria and at least one of the recommended goals or characteristics outlined below. Priority will be given to projects that meet multiple goals. The Committee reserves the right to refuse endorsement of a project or program.

All requests for endorsement must be submitted using the enclosed form, Application for Endorsement of an Indiana WWI Centennial Project.

Projects or programs MUST be:

• Open and accessible to the public
• Relevant to Indiana and the state’s WWI Centennial
• Self-funded (without WWI Committee support)
• Achievable

Projects or programs must also meet at least one of the following recommended goals or characteristics:

• Culturally inclusive
• Creating a legacy for the future
• Commemorative
• Engaging and inspiring to youth and young adults
• Educational

All requests for endorsement must be submitted to WorldWarICentennial@iara.in.gov. 

Exclusion Clause:

Please note that the Indiana WWI Centennial Committee will not consider endorsing the following:

• For-profit ventures (The Indiana WWI Centennial Committee may consider entering into a licensing, program or partnership or sponsorship agreement for use of the Indiana Centennial WWI logo. Please contact the Indiana WWI Centennial Committee for more information.)
• Political individuals or organizations

Once the Indiana WWI Committee has received your application, it will be reviewed at the next Indiana WWI Centennial Committee meeting.

Britain, the USA, and Indiana: the Great War in Song

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, Butler University’s Global and Historical Studies program presented “Britain, the USA, and Indiana: Tthe Great War in Song: Popular and Art Songs From and About World War I," on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM in the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall.

Greensburg School Corporation Event

Greensburg Community High School (GCHS) students and teachers welcomed the community to a free patriotic presentation intended to commemorate Decatur County's involvement in World War I, and most specifically, its soldiers whose acts of valor performed in the name of freedom helped turn the tide of war.

Honor & Remember Sergeant Alexander Louis Arch

The Schuyler Colfax Chapter, NSDAR hosted a memorial service honoring Hoosier World War I hero Sgt. Alexander L. Arch on October 23, 2017, in Osceola, Indiana.

Hoosiers at War Exhibition

The Indiana State Library's "Hoosiers at War" exhibition showcases publications, correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other materials detailing the experiences of Hoosiers during World War I, both at home and abroad.

Howard County in World War I

The Howard County Historical Society is asking the community to bring in anything that they might have that would relate to Howard County's involvement in the war such as letters, photos, objects, etc. There will be an exhibit showcasing these items to tell the story of Howard County's involvement in The Great War.

In Service of Mercy: Evansville's WWI Nurses

In honor of the World War I Centennial, the Vanderburgh County Clerk's Office is researching and compiling the biographies on each remarkable woman who served as a WWI nurse from Vanderburgh County.

Jefferson County Veterans Banner Project

The Jefferson County Veterans Project honors local veterans and active service personnel by placing banners on light poles honoring their service.

Miami County Worth Remembering

Celebrating the Times and Saluting Our Veterans of World War I

 The Miami County Museum in Peru, Indiana is searching for our doughboys, red cross nurses, auxiliary aid workers and doughnut dollies!

Poppy Field

This project will create one poppy for every WWI veteran with Miami county ties. They are to be placed in the Courthouse lawn around the Doughboy statue between November 1 and November 10.

Families are invited to place a poppy in honor of their soldier and so remember them with us on November 10.
